A formal essay assignment for use after reading the novel.
> Six different essay topics are provided for students to select from. Each topic includes numerous follow-up questions for students to respond in their essays.
Example Topic:

Following Paths: Siddhartha follows many different paths in his search for self and truth. What paths does he follow? Why does he follow each of these, and, what is the result? Why does he change paths? What path/s is most successful for him? Have you, consciously, chosen paths? If so, what were they, and, how did you come to make the decision/s you did?
> Assignment description is very detailed and includes formatting and other expectations, such as:
- A thorough and thoughtful discussion of the question you choose to answer
- Organized and clear explanation of your thoughts
- Adequate and appropriate examples from the text (as both quotes and paraphrasing) to support your ideas/opinions
- A conclusion that is on topic and creates a sense of closure for the essay
- Your essay (final draft only) must be written on a word processing program (g. Word)
> Length on the assignment is left blank for teacher to fill in as desired: "Minimum length: _____ pages Maximum length: _____ pages".
> Grading rubric included, and aligned directly with the stated expectations and requirements of the assignment. The rubric totals 100 for easy grading.
> If you incorporate the Six Traits of Writing into your classroom I have included a second rubric based solely on the Six Traits. Also included is a description of the Six Traits of Writing to remind students of what those are.
> Depending on teacher's decision regarding the length requirement and and modifications, this can be a 2 day or a full week's length assignment.
