Like many of our materials, this workbook is modified for students who operate below grade level. So while this novel would probably not be used below grade 10 , questions are around grade 7-8 level. The questions are often wh- questions (who, what, where, etc.), and few are higher order thinking questions.
Example Questions: -What is Mvelo determined about? -Describe each character using at least three descriptive phrases for each. -What did Zola’s mother get sick from? -Why didn’t students realize that Zola was pregnant? -Who is Sipho dishonest with? -How does Mvelo show loyalty to her mother? -What completely changes Johan and Perta’s relationship? -What are Sipho’s struggles in Chicago? -Predict what you think might happen in the chapters ahead. -Why does Nonceba take Mvelo out on the sea?-Petra and Johan feel blessed because… -What was returning to school like for Mvelo? Describe. -Mvelo had grown very wise in her twenty years” pg. 138 What events in the novel do you think contributed to Mvelo’s wisdom? -The meeting at the restaurant in Tribeca is very emotional. What about this scene was surprising to you, or, what was particularly interesting?
